Researchers at UC Irvine have used advanced technology, virtual reality training and physical therapy to perform a miracle. They are helping a man, confined to a wheelchair for 5 years, due to a spinal cord injury, walk again – using the power of his brain. The man’s brain is actually communicating with electrodes placed on his knees. Pardon the unintentional pun, but this is the first step in demonstrating how the brain may enable people with spinal cord injuries to walk without the need for prosthetic limbs or walking aids.
